About ColorSensorism™

Artist Statement

"The foundation of all my work is color, fresh and alive. One beautiful single color is often the inspiration for a painting. Next, I meditate on my setting and canvas—I am the instrument and when I begin, I rarely know what will emerge. The magic of ColorSensorism is intuitively allowing the painting itself to come to life: inspiration starts with a color, then adds other colors in form, layers into a design, becomes a set of objects on the canvas, coalesces into a painting, then transmutes into emotion until each viewer is swept up into a highly individualized experience with the painting. What I like most is the joy and awe of watching how tubes of paint and canvas are transformed into a playful, emotive experience for those who share it as a finished work of art."

Artist Sheila Runkis

"I am a mostly self-taught artist who has developed a novel set of techniques for creating art called 'ColorSensorism.' In essence, ColorSensorism amalgamates the traditional styles of representational art, abstract art and non-objective art into a new art form using color to bridge the aesthetic divide. Achieving harmony between these disparate styles is not easy. To accomplish it, I start each painting by focusing my mind, one-pointedly, on an object of interest until I merge with its soul in a state of unity and allow its Spirit to flow within me. Then I project this pure energy into my paintings by converting my feelings into a group of sensory color perceptions which express themselves in my work.

"Each painting has a rich variety of ethereal shapes and suggestions of shapes which are uniquely inter-preted by the viewer in a one-on-one exchange between the viewer and the painting itself. The work is always amazingly colorful, and full of movement and force. And since my spiritual orientation is very strong, the oil paintings I create become a form of spiritual intuitive art that is always inspiring.

"Come share this new and exciting vision of the world around me, the world within me; the world that lies beyond the realm of the senses. ColorSensorism is truly an adventure beyond space and time."

About Color On This Site

Every effort is made to photograph, digitalize and color-correct each painting shown on this website to provide the most accurate digital rendering possible. Despite these efforts, seeing the paintings "in the flesh" is always pleasantly surprising. This website has been described as a "visual feast," but sadly, it does not do the paintings justice. It does not, and indeed it cannot, because of limitations imposed by digital media and the laws of physics. Why is this?

First of all, the colors you perceive while viewing a painting or giclee is the result of the full spectrum of white light being reflected off the canvas. That spectrum is what you see when you separate sunlight by shining it through a prism. The colors that enter your eye while viewing a canvas are what is left of white light after all the other spectral colors have been selectively absorbed. In brief, white light results from all light being reflected back to your eye while black results from all colors being absorbed and annihilated.

The colors you see when looking at your computer screen are quite different, however. All screen colors are generated by combining only three colors of light: red, blue and green. White is the result of all three colors shining at 100% intensity. That in itself is a limitation, but to make it worse NO TWO MONITORS RENDER COLOR EXACTLY THE SAME unless they have been recently and professionally color balanced.
